Leytonstone Ilford are a football club that, with hindsight, feel like just one cog in a chain of mergers and re-badgings. Boro’ came up against the combined forces of Leytonstone and Ilford just twice in the end. And both were during the 1986-7 league season. To be honest, our record isn’t really worth spending much time on. We lost by a single goal in each fixture time as the east London side went on to seal the Vauxhall Opel League Division One title by 13 points.

In 1988, a whole decade without a merger gave them itchy feet. So, first they absorbed Walthamstow Avenue and, a season later, they rebranded as Redbridge Forest. Not satisfied with that, the club then merged again in 1992 – with Dagenham, just to be clear. Unsurprisingly, this led to the formation of Dagenham & Redbridge. As we write 30 years down the line, we guess the folks down there are now happy with how everything is. No more mergers for now, then.

Club History

Who are Leytonstone Ilford?

Formed in 1979, the club brought together the combined histories of Leytonstone (formed 1886) and Ilford (formed 1881). Both had their successes over the years too. Leytonstone were eight-time Isthmian League champions, with three FA Amateur Cup wins too. Ilford, on the other hand, won the Isthmian League on three occasions and the FA Amateur Cup twice – along with numerous defeats in the final. So, a combined club would surely be stronger.

Yeah, to be fair, it was. Their 1986-7 Isthmian League Division One title was their second; claiming the crown in their debut season. In fact, the early 1980s was a very purple patch. After winning promotion to the Premier Division, they won that title at the second attempt. Only ground problems (we hear ya!) stood in the way of them gaining promotion to the Conference. The mid-1980s were less great, however. They were relegated back to Division One in 1985.
