Rushden Town
A hard nut to crack in our United Counties League Premier Division days, Rushden Town went onto form a half of Rushden & Diamonds in 1992. The Diamonds’ formation was the result of a merger of the Russians and another of our UCL opponents – Irthlingborough Diamonds. In their own right, Town were the team to beat; up there with the best in the division.
But we did get the better of them in our fourth and final encounter; a 2-0 win at Broadhall Way. The reason that we didn’t meet again after the 1982-3 season is because the Russians – runners-up that season for the third time in six years – moved into the Southern League. That’s where they stayed; the new Diamonds club formed in 1992 claiming their spot. And, with it, the story of Rushden Town came to its natural conclusion.

Club History
Who are Rushden Town?
In the early days, there wasn’t a ‘Town’ on the club’s name; plain old Rushden FC formed in 1889. Five years into their existence, the Russians became members of the Midland League. Here they remained until 1901 – the point at which they opted to switch to the Northamptonshire League with the Town suffix added to their name. For much of the period after, there’s little to report. That said, the club did quit the competition twice; the second time coming after it had been rebranded to the United Counties League.
From 1962 onwards, the Russians were members of the UCL for the duration – more or less. And they were quite a force; runners-up on five occasions between 1962 and 1983. In addition, there were two title wins to add to the rollcall. In 1983, however, the club reached the end of the line with regards to the UCL – this time permanently. Into the Southern League they went, reaching the Premier Division in 1990 for one year. At the end of the 1991-2 Midland Division season, they finished eighth. It was their last as a solo entity.
