Formed as Abbey United in 1912, it wasn't until 1951 that the club became known as Cambridge United. They were elected to the Football League in 1970 at the expense of Bradford Park Avenue, and performed well during their League years; by 1992, the club had reached Division One - a league below the newly-formed Premiership. It was a short stay, however, finishing second bottom, and so instigated a descent that culminated in relegation back to the non-league.
Admittedly, between 1997 and 2003, the club yo-yo'd between Division Two and Three, but in 2005, a poor season saw them finish rock-bottom of the Football League. The first two seasons in the Conference were hardly anything to write home about, but the 2007/8 season saw a resurgence by the U's, and it saw them through to an ultimately unsuccessful playoff final against Exeter City. More heartache was to follow in the 2008/9 playoff final, with yet another Devon opponent - Torquay United - halting their promotion bid at the last.
