Who Are... Cambridge United FC?
After relegation from the Football League in 2005, Cambridge United's first season in the Conference was hardly a spectacular one, ending the campaign in twelfth, nineteen points off the playoffs and seventeen points from the dropzone. The 2006/7 season was less of a success too, with the U's a perilous four points from the relegation spots and more was naturally demanded during the 2007/8 campaign.
The U's rejigged their squad over the close season and having experienced two difficult seasons in the league, the 2007/8 season showed signs that Cambridge United were ready to emerge as a team to watch out for. An impressive campaign saw them march to second spot in the league, and after a spirited comeback against Burton Albion in the playoffs, Cambridge United made it to Wembley for a playoff final with Exeter City.
The bid for promotion was scuppered at the last hurdle despite being statistically the second best team in the league; if it hurt the first time round under Jimmy Quinn, it was undoubtedly going to hurt again when Gary Brabin's men came up short against Torquay in 2008/9 despite a heroic performance against Stevenage Borough in the playoff semi-finals to overcome a 3-1 first leg deficit. Surely battle-hardened by their repeated near misses, the U's will - without doubt - be vying for the top slot yet again come May 2010. It's anyone's guess as to whether they can make it third time lucky.
