Cookies Policy
Like most websites, BoroGuide uses cookies. Om nom nom.
Wait, not those cookies. And you’ve never heard that one before, have you?
A cookie in this sense is a small piece of information stored by your browser. Cookies and similar technologies can do various jobs, from making a website work properly to helping measure how people use it or deciding which adverts to show.
This policy explains what BoroGuide uses them for and, more importantly, the choices you have.
Your choice
When required, BoroGuide asks for your permission before using non-essential cookies or similar storage for analytics and advertising.
You can:
- Consent
- Do not consent
- Manage options
Refusing optional cookies does not prevent you from using BoroGuide.
You can also change your decision later using the Privacy and cookie settings link on the website.
Essential cookies
Some cookies may be necessary for the website or its administrative functions to work properly.
For example, WordPress can use cookies when someone logs into the website, when an administrator edits content, or where a visitor chooses to have information remembered when leaving a comment.
These aren’t used to build an advertising profile.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how BoroGuide is being used. It can tell us things such as which pages are popular, how visitors reach the website and how people navigate around it.
Where consent is required, analytics storage is disabled unless you give permission.
If you consent, Google Analytics may set cookies including:
_ga – used to distinguish visitors for analytics purposes.
_ga_<measurement-id> – used by Google Analytics to maintain information about a visitor’s session.
Google Analytics 4 does not log or store individual IP addresses.
If you decline analytics consent, these Analytics cookies are not set by BoroGuide.
Advertising
BoroGuide uses Google AdSense to fund the running of the website.
Google and participating advertising technology providers may use cookies or similar technologies for purposes including delivering and measuring advertising and, where you have consented, personalising the adverts you see.
The providers involved can vary depending on the advertising available at the time, so rather than pretend we can maintain an eternally accurate list here, you can see the current providers and their purposes through Manage options in our privacy and cookie settings.
Depending on your choices, Google advertising services may use cookies including __gads, __gpi and __eoi.
Declining consent does not necessarily mean that you will stop seeing adverts. Advertising may still be displayed in circumstances where it can be served without the storage or processing for which you declined consent.
Our consent system
We use Google’s European regulations consent platform for visitors in the UK, EEA and Switzerland.
It records and communicates your choices to Google’s advertising and analytics services and participating advertising technology providers.
Our implementation also uses Google’s Consent Mode. Before a visitor makes a choice, relevant advertising and analytics storage is set to denied. Your choices are then communicated to the relevant Google services.
Changing your mind
Consent isn’t a lifetime membership.
You can reopen the consent controls at any time using the Privacy and cookie settings link on BoroGuide and change the choices you previously made.
You can also delete cookies already stored on your device through your browser’s privacy settings.
Third-party and embedded content
Some BoroGuide pages may contain content supplied by another website or service.
When third-party content is loaded, that provider may receive technical information or use its own cookies or similar technologies. Where those technologies require consent, they should not be used until the appropriate permission has been obtained.
Browser controls
Modern browsers also allow you to inspect, delete and block cookies.
Browser interfaces change regularly, so rather than provide instructions for Internet Explorer or tell Chrome users to click an “Under the Bonnet” menu that disappeared approximately seventeen geological eras ago, we’d recommend using the privacy or cookie settings provided by your current browser.
Blocking cookies through your browser may affect some website functionality.
More information
More information about cookies and online privacy is available from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
We may update this policy when the technologies or services used by BoroGuide change. The latest version will always appear on this page.
