Frank Cornwell was appointed manager of Stevenage Borough in 1983, having taken charge of the reserve team during 1982-3.

Prior to his time at Broadhall Way, Cornwell was assistant manager at Wymondley United under former Stevenage Town striker Keith Berry, with the side particularly successful in the North Herts and Senior County League between 1976 and 1979.

In 1979, he became manager of Wymondley United and made a name for himself due to his statistical analysis - rarely would he be seen without a clipboard. Cornwell's next move was to become Boro' reserve team manager, before first team manager in 1983 - all the while never being afraid to put his name down on the teamsheet when the need arose. He stepped down from the role in mid-September 1987.

It wasn't to be the end of his association with Boro', however, as Cornwell was to return to Broadhall Way in November that year; invited back into a dual role that handled both scouting and commercial activities.
