Replacing Paul Fairclough who was dismissed as Boro' chief in 2002 for the second time in his career, Wayne Turner arrived having been number two at Peterborough United. Apparently Phil Wallace's first choice before hiring Cloughie for his second stint, Turner came with excellent coaching credentials and inherited a side pretty much safe in the middle of the league table, but one that was careering towards the FA Trophy final.

Although his predecessor had overseen Boro's path through to the quarter finals, Turner kept Boro's FA Trophy run going past Stalybridge and Morecambe to a showdown with Yeovil, which ultimately ended in defeat. Turner's spell at Boro', however, was to be measured in months rather than years, as a dismal 2002/3 campaign forced Phil Wallace's hand after defeat at Kettering Town on Boxing Day 2002 that saw Boro' slump to the bottom of the pile and looking in grave danger of going down.
