Marvin Williams

Date of Birth: 12-08-1987

Place of Birth:

A right-sided player who can double up as a striker, Marvin Williams arrived at the Lamex after a brief spell at the Swedish side Ostersunds FK. He was one of a number of English players who had swapped the Football League for the colder climes of Scandinavia. In the case of Williams, though, it came about after he’d played for two League clubs in the same season. Under FA rules, a third wasn’t allowed in 2009-10. So, he’d either have to move to a different country or move into non-league.

A different country it was, then.

The 2010-1 season meant the slate was wiped clean, however. And it also meant he could come back to the Football League. For Boro’, the first couple of months at a higher level were a challenge. Graham Westley decided, as autumn rolled into town, that we needed fresh blood. Williams is one of the lads he turned to; both parties hoping he could repeat a couple of successful spells – one at Brentford and the other at Yeovil Town.

After impressing on a trial basis, Boro’ confirmed Williams’ arrival on non-contract terms; “There’s a lot more I want to show the gaffer. I think at this stage he wants to see what I can do and I’m quite a versatile player, which I think he likes,” he told The Comet. In the end, though, his time at Boro’ came to nothing more than one substitute appearance. It came on the same day his arrival was announced; a 2-0 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

Shortly after, he moved on.

Marvin Williams: After Boro’

From here, the winger stepped down a level or two and joined Hemel Hempstead Town to start with. But he moved back into full-time action in November 2011 after seeing out the 2010-1 campaign at Hemel. Admittedly, that was with Blue Square South team Salisbury City. Even so, this was a successful time for the player too; his goal tally going into double figures and a first professional hattrick to boot.

In summer 2012, Eastleigh came a-calling – but his time there lasted just 11 appearances before the club released him. Not that Williams was left waiting around for a club for long; Sutton United coming in for him. The winger found the net regularly as the campaign wore on. Injury, however, started to become a problem for Williams in the 2013-4 season – only turning out 16 times.

After starting the 2014-5 season mainly from the bench, a chance to go out on loan to help with his recovery came about. That was at Tonbridge Angels, who he joined in October. At the start, it was just for a month. But it ended up being for the whole season as Williams started to find some form. Sadly, however, the winger hung up his boots at the end of that season; his injury issues failing to clear up and denying him many more years of action.

Williams did stay in the game though, with a move into coaching.
