Young forward Luke Freeman joined Stevenage on a two-month loan deal in November 2011, albeit with a view to an extension at the time. Having started his career on the books of Charlton Athletic, it was with Gillingham that the player made his senior debut as 15-year-old in November 2007. Within a couple of months, he was snapped up by Premier League giants Arsenal.

Freeman signed professional terms with the Gunners in April 2009, but came to Boro' without having broken into Arsene Wenger's first team. During a loan spell with Yeovil Town in 2010, the player scored two goals in 13 appearances. He caught the eye of Boro' manager Graham Westley ahead of the 2011/2 season, impressing for an Arsenal XI in a pre-season friendly.

The player immediately settled into the Boro' set up and was a consistent performer during his loan arrangement. Nonetheless, it was very much a surprise in January 2012 when Stevenage announced that Freeman had signed a permanent, two-and-a-half-year deal with the club. Luring the youngster away from Arsenal was a significant coup.
