James Dunne was among manager Gary Smith's summer signings in 2012, with the player opting to join the Hertfordshire club from Exeter City. In doing so, the midfielder was able to remain in League One with Boro'; the Grecians having been relegated from the division at the end of the 2011/2 campaign.

Dunne started his career on youth terms at Wimbledon, before being given the opportunity to move onto Arsenal in 2004. He remained with the Gunners for five years, signing a professional contract in 2007. However, he was not afforded any first team game time and the player moved on to Exeter City in 2009.

During his time in the south west, Dunne made more than 100 appearances and scored a handful of goals along the way. The 2012 move to Stevenage reunited the player with Gary Smith, a man who the tough-tackling midfielder had worked with during his time at Wimbledon.

It was also to be a signature that added yet more bite to the Boro'. As the Hertfordshire club moved into its new era under Smith's leadership, Dunne was an acquisition that the club were delighted to have made and was someone charged with helping Stevenage move onto the next stage.
