Powerful wide man Lucas Akins was snapped up in summer 2012 after Stevenage agreed a fee with former club Tranmere Rovers. The player had been long admired by manager Gary Smith, who was no doubt delighted to secure his services and strengthen the squad ahead of the 2012/3 season.

Akins started his career as a member of the youth ranks at Huddersfield Town. He was promoted to the senior team in April 2007, before receiving a one-year contract the following month. However, his opportunities were restricted to just a handful of appearances and a loan spell at Northwich Victoria.

In 2008, the player moved north of the border to Hamilton Academical - then of the Scottish Premier League. But once again, first-team chances were found to be at a premium and a temporary spell at Partick Thistle was next up. He was released by Hamilton in summer 2010.

Returning to the English leagues, Akins was snapped up by Tranmere Rovers and developed into a strong, pacy asset. During his two-year stay with the club, he made around 80 appearances and found the goal on a handful of occasions. It was his performances at Prenton Park which caught the eye of the then Boro' boss.
