The transfer window may have closed nearly a month previously, but that didn't prevent Gary Smith from adding to his Boro' squad in September 2012. Andy Iro became the latest acquisition to Smith's new-look Boro' ranks and, similarly, the latest to arrive having experienced football in Major League Soccer.

Although born in Liverpool, the tall defender had spent his entire career Stateside before joining Stevenage. He did play youth football in his native city, but moved to California on a soccer scholarship at University of California, Santa Barbara - where he won NCAA Men's Division I Soccer Championship.

After leaving university, he was snapped up by Columbus Crew and spent three years at the club. In 2008, he won both the Major League Soccer MLS Cup and the Major League Soccer Supporters' Shield, prior to his departure in 2011 for Toronto FC.

However, his stay north of the border in Canada was to be a short one and, in early 2012, Iro declined the opportunity to renew his contract with the club. A new adventure did not present itself until September and the opportunity to join Stevenage; a time in which the Hertfordshire club were really stepping up.

In a tough 2012/3 season, it was slightly confusing as to why Andy Iro never featured in a defence that needed shoring up. The player spent a brief time on loan at Barnet, but never took to the field in a Stevenage shirt and was released by Graham Westley in summer 2013.
