Gavin Mahon was added to the Stevenage squad on a temporary basis in February 2013, with the combative midfielder joining for the remainder of the 2012-3 season. It was a signature designed to provide Boro' with an extra bite at a time when a poor form required addressing.

In securing the services of Birmingham-born Mahon from fellow League One outfit Notts County, the Hertfordshire had recruited someone with plenty of Football League experience dating back to his trainee days with Wolverhampton Wanderers - relatively local to the West Midlander.

Wolves didn't work out for Mahon and he moved down the divisions to Hereford United, where he established his credentials. With around 70 appearances in two years at Edgar Street, he caught the attention of Brentford and moved to west London in a stay that was to last four years and include 150+ outings.

However, it was to be at Vicarage Road and with Watford where Mahon was to really make himself at home. In around six years in south Hertfordshire, the midfielder was to amass nearly 200 appearances and Premier League experience. It was a spell that saw him captain the Hornets to play-off success in 2006.

Once his stay at Watford came to an end, QPR beckoned for the player but didn't offer him the regular playing time he'd enjoyed elsewhere. Time spent at Loftus Road included a loan move to Crystal Palace, but the Eagles didn't utilise his services at all and he eventually left QPR in 2011.
