One of the raft of new additions to join Stevenage in summer 2014, Dean Wells arrived at the Lamex Stadium from Conference Premier side Braintree Town for a reported fee of around £25,000 after helping the Essex side to a respectable sixth place finish in 2013-4.

In joining Boro', it was the first time in 10 years that Wells had been on the books of a Football League club; he started his career at Brentford as a young player but made a limited number of appearances before being released by then manager Martin Allen in 2004.

The defender looked to non-league to rebuild his career and started that path with Hampton and Richmond Borough, a club at which he stayed for seven years in the Ryman League and then Conference South - and so nearly the Conference Premier, losing a playoff in 2009.

When the time came to depart the Beveree Stadium, his next port of call was Staines Town. But it was the briefest of stays; four appearances racked up before he moved on to Braintree Town during the club's first season in the Conference Premier.

During the second half of the 2016-7 League Two campaign, Wells found himself spending more time on the sidelines. And, despite a handful of appearances in the final stages of the season, Wells was let go by the club in May 2017.
