Boro' manager Darren Sarll continued his preparations for the 2016-7 League Two season with the loan signing of young Irish defender Shaun Donnellan. After moving to shore up his attacking options with three new strikers, Sarll switched his attention back to defence and captured the services of Donnellan on a half-season arrangement.

Prior to his arrival at the Lamex, Donnellan had gained his first team experience at Worcester City - having spent the full 2015-6 campaign with the Conference North side. But parent club West Bromwich Albion had high hopes for Donnellan and saw his move to Boro' as a superb chance to gain valuable first team experience at a lower level.

The Baggies' confidence in Donnellan were underlined by the fact he was handed a new one-year deal just before he signed for Stevenage. Not only had he came through the youth ranks at The Hawthornes, but the tall defender has also established himself as a Republic of Ireland U19 international.

Yet, the defender's time at the Lamex was short-lived. After he failed to make a single appearance in the Boro' red and white, it was revealed on the August transfer deadline day that the loan deal had been cancelled. Donnellan returned to West Brom in time to turn out for the club's U23 side in their first Checkatrade Trophy outing with presumably little more first team experience than he first arrived with.
