Boro' manager Darren Sarll made full use of the summer 2017 transfer window; Kyle Wootton one of two new additions during its final knockings. The 20-year-old, 6-foot-two striker came to the Lamex to provide yet more strength to an already-formidable front line. The half-season loan deal gave us a different dimension to our striking options; one that would surely lay solid foundations for Boro's promotion push in 2017-8.

Scunthorpe United had been Wootton's club since his youth days. A first-team debut came in 2014, with a pro contract not far behind; signing terms with the Iron in early 2015. The following campaign saw the forward go out on loan to Lincoln City of the National League for two months. A season later, it was back to that same competition; this time with North Ferriby United for three months.

After his time at North Ferriby, Wootton's return to Scunthorpe was a brief one. By the end of the January 2017 window, the forward was out on loan again. This time, however, it would be in the Football League; with Cheltenham Town to be exact. And it was at Whaddon Road that he stayed for the rest of the 2016-7 season. The move to Boro', therefore, arguably marked yet another step upwards. Given his performances up to that point, too, there was plenty of cause for optimism.
