After coming in too late to halt Stevenage Borough's slide back into Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North in 1988, Brian Williams was looking to revive Boro's fortunes going into the 1988-9 campaign. The bid to get promoted back up at the first attempt was a decent one, but fell five points short come the end of the season as Harlow Town and Thurrock went up.

The club's FA Cup run had an unusual end to it, with Boro' thrown out of the competition after playing Brian Aldridge in goal - not realising he was ineligible to participate. Elsewhere, Tilbury accounted for the club's FA Vase ambitions at the preliminary round stage and Dover Athletic put paid to any aspirations of success in the Knights Floodlit League.

Most appearances: Graham Cox - 51

Top goalscorer: Martin Gittings - 24
