The 1980-81 season was Stevenage Borough’s first in senior football and it all seemed like it was a doddle once this particular race had been run. Starting on 16 August 1980 with a home match against ON Chenecks, Boro’ went on to score in the next 21 games. And it would appear Derek Montgomery‘s men found life in United Counties League Division One pretty easy.
No result showed that more than what remains our record win. That was an 11-1 hammering over British Timken Athletic on 6 December, in case you didn’t know. Boro’ went on to win all but nine of their league fixtures that term, scoring more than a ton of goals in the process. And the league title was not the only piece of silverware that season.
In marking a pretty impressive debut season, Stevenage Borough added the United Counties League Cup to their pristine new trophy cabinet. We were up and running in senior football, at last. And it’s fair to say that many more good times would follow too. The 1980-81 campaign was perhaps just the appetiser…
